The Garage Campus

Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025

Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture in 2025. Under the motto “C the Unseen – European Makers of Democracy”, the city has presented a convincing concept which, in addition to an artistic program, provides for the development of various intervention areas in the city area. In the course of the application for European Capital of Culture 2025, four major infrastructure projects were defined as important building blocks of Chemnitz’s urban development. With the title win in autumn 2020, the first course was set for the further development and design of these infrastructure projects and their sustainable use as intervention areas.

In addition to the Hartmannhalle, which is home to the European Workshop for Culture & Democracy, the cultural and creative business hub “Die Stadtwirtschaft” and the “Stadt am Fluss” project, which revitalizes sites along the Chemnitz River by means of artistic interventions and cultural events, the former depot of the Chemnitzer Verkehrsbetriebe (CVAG) in the Kappel district holds a great deal of undiscovered design potential. The entire area is being developed into a central cultural location – in agreement with the main owner of the site, CVAG, and the museums already located, the tram museum and clock museum, local residents, various interest groups and interested citizens of Chemnitz. This building complex, which is known as the garage campus, is protected as a historical monument and to attain sustainable local and regional significance and at the same time become a place with supraregional and European appeal.

The city of Chemnitz has entrusted Age of Artists with the management of the concept development process and the formulation of the overall result. The main objective of the concept to be developed for the garage campus is to work out detailed utilization scenarios that enable sustainable and lasting revitalization of the entire area, even beyond the Capital of Culture year 2025. The conversion and further development of the existing architectural and spatial situations is intended to create a cultural venue of long-term significance for the neighborhood, the city, the region and Europe.
